WEBVTT
1
00:00:02.780 –> 00:00:12.100
Gillian Bennett: Hello, and welcome to another episode of Building a Coaching Business in Motherhood. I’m Gillian, your mentor, and today.
2
00:00:14.490 –> 00:00:25.289
Gillian Bennett: Hello, and welcome to another episode of Building a Coaching Business in Motherhood. I’m Gillian, and today we are going to talk about building self-trust in business.
3
00:00:40.220 –> 00:00:43.500
Gillian Bennett: Hello, and welcome to another episode.
4
00:00:44.160 –> 00:00:54.380
Gillian Bennett: Hello, and welcome to another episode of Building a Coaching Business in Motherhood. I’m Gillian, and today we are going to talk about how to build more self-trust.
5
00:00:54.620 –> 00:01:10.049
Gillian Bennett: In your business. And the reason I wanted to talk about building self-trust is because I think especially in motherhood, if you’re coming back to your business, maybe you’ve had a baby in the last year, year or two, and you’re still trying to figure out who am I in this business?
6
00:01:10.050 –> 00:01:21.399
Gillian Bennett: In this season of my life, and often, as a mother, we really need to reevaluate our relationship with our businesses, especially if we started it before we had a baby.
7
00:01:21.400 –> 00:01:36.140
Gillian Bennett: And we are often bombarded by so much content that tells us the things that we should be doing in order to build our businesses. And that can really undermine our self-trust. It can get into our heads and make us.
8
00:01:36.140 –> 00:01:44.450
Gillian Bennett: Kind of feel like we’re getting whiplash from all of this information that’s coming at us about the things that we should do in order to build a successful business.
9
00:01:44.450 –> 00:01:51.829
Gillian Bennett: And I think it is even I think it’s harder now than it’s ever been, because all of us
10
00:01:52.030 –> 00:02:08.750
Gillian Bennett: if we follow anyone on social media, we likely follow at least one or 2 different business coaches, even if you’re working with a business coach. So I know that the mentorship clients I have follow other business coaches, and that’s not necessarily a problem.
11
00:02:08.750 –> 00:02:27.340
Gillian Bennett: Some of those business coaches, maybe they’ll give them some ideas of like, oh, wait, this could work. Then they may bring it to me and be like, hey, I heard this thing. Let’s talk about how it might work in my business. But I also know that it’s really challenging, especially if you don’t currently have a mentor, or maybe you do have a mentor that is just like very much.
12
00:02:27.340 –> 00:02:28.000
Gillian Bennett: Like.
13
00:02:28.020 –> 00:02:40.670
Gillian Bennett: deep into, this is the way that you need to run your business, and it can be hard to build the trust in yourself to say, hey, this is what is right for me, I can say no to this, I can say yes to this, and I trust in that decision.
14
00:02:40.920 –> 00:02:56.990
Gillian Bennett: And so, specifically, the way I define self-trust in business is being able to take in information and filter that information to know if it makes sense for you or not, and be able to take action based on what is right for you in this moment.
15
00:02:57.380 –> 00:03:16.459
Gillian Bennett: And I think this is so important because information is very easy to come by. Sometimes we’re not even seeking out information. Information is just thrown at us. And I genuinely believe that without spending any money at all, you can find all of the information that you need.
16
00:03:16.460 –> 00:03:27.399
Gillian Bennett: Right? You are not paying a business coach for information. All of the information that you need is free on the internet. We are living in an era, and I think this is also helpful for you to think about in context of your coaching clients.
17
00:03:27.400 –> 00:03:42.400
Gillian Bennett: All of the information that we could possibly need is available on the internet, right? The real skill and what makes that information really work or not is you being able to know what is right for you, when it’s right for you, and how to put it in practice.
18
00:03:42.440 –> 00:03:46.410
Gillian Bennett: And I think there’s a huge parallel to motherhood here, because
19
00:03:46.670 –> 00:03:48.480
Gillian Bennett: When we 1st have our kids.
20
00:03:48.530 –> 00:04:13.520
Gillian Bennett: We are constantly trying to figure out like what is the right answer? We are constantly consuming information and maybe you’re different. I’m just talking from my personal experience where I was constantly trying to find the answers for what I should do in different situations. And honestly, there’s so much information out there that we can drive ourselves insane taking it all in because some of it directly contradicts itself. And the same in business, like you will see one business.
21
00:04:13.520 –> 00:04:28.200
Gillian Bennett: business coach being like, you need to build your coaching business on, you know, low ticket, and then only take on high, you know, VIP high ticket clients, and then other people are gonna be like, no, you need to fill your one-on-one coaching before you move into anything else. Both are correct.
22
00:04:28.200 –> 00:04:37.850
Gillian Bennett: But it really depends on what is actually right for you, so you need to be able to filter that. You need to be able to trust yourself to filter that, right? And so, like, in motherhood.
23
00:04:37.850 –> 00:04:46.500
Gillian Bennett: We can drive ourselves insane taking in all of the information about how to raise our child, but ultimately, we develop the ability
24
00:04:46.500 –> 00:05:03.499
Gillian Bennett: to filter what’s right for us, and what is right for the child we have in front of us, and what is right for our families at what times, right? And so, as we develop as mothers, we build more and more of this self-trust of, like, oh, wait, this is what works for my family and my child.
25
00:05:03.500 –> 00:05:07.330
Gillian Bennett: This is maybe interesting information, but it’s not right for me right now.
26
00:05:07.440 –> 00:05:16.829
Gillian Bennett: And I tend to abide by this within my mentorship containers as well. I can offer advice and information and guidance and perspective.
27
00:05:16.940 –> 00:05:32.749
Gillian Bennett: But ultimately, I always tell my clients, this choice is yours. I can help you weigh the options, I can give you different ideas, we can talk through them together. Ultimately, the decisions and the actions need to be taken by you.
28
00:05:32.750 –> 00:05:41.940
Gillian Bennett: And I’ve worked with coaches before that are like, well, you know, every the coach that I worked with, they were great, but they just told me, like, ultimately, I had to figure it out myself. And there’s a difference here.
29
00:05:42.340 –> 00:05:46.439
Gillian Bennett: There is a difference between honoring your autonomy.
30
00:05:46.550 –> 00:06:00.160
Gillian Bennett: And putting everything on, like, well, you just need to figure it out, right? Because that can be so incredibly frustrating when you’re working with a business coach or a mentor, and they just, like, hand you a template, and they’re like, here, just follow this template and figure it out. I can’t tell you what the answer is.
31
00:06:00.290 –> 00:06:13.050
Gillian Bennett: Of course, as a mentor, I can’t tell you what the answer is, but I can help you really clearly go through the different options, weigh the positives and the negatives, and ultimately help you make an informed decision, right?
32
00:06:13.090 –> 00:06:28.030
Gillian Bennett: my mentorship is not about being the CEO of someone else’s business and making decisions for them, but it’s also not about just, like, here’s a bunch of information, go run with it. It’s about helping the women that I work with step into the role of CEO of their coaching business.
33
00:06:28.030 –> 00:06:35.800
Gillian Bennett: Fully, and with more confidence, and with the support that they need to know that they can figure it out.
34
00:06:35.800 –> 00:06:38.489
Gillian Bennett: Without having to do it all by themselves, right?
35
00:06:38.490 –> 00:06:56.939
Gillian Bennett: And it is really hard to trust yourself in your business to make the right decisions if you’ve been struggling for a while, or maybe you’ve been, quote unquote, doing all of the right things and you’re not seeing business growth or you’re not seeing your coaching spots fill. And I think there are a lot of icky business coaches that prey on that lack of self-trust.
36
00:06:56.940 –> 00:07:03.259
Gillian Bennett: And that’s why I wanna give you these three filters that we’re gonna talk about today to help you be able to filter out information.
37
00:07:03.390 –> 00:07:20.370
Gillian Bennett: But honestly, every single coach that I have worked with has worked with at least one other business coach or one other business coaching program before working with me. And some of them were amazingly positive experiences. And the reason that they’re with me now is because.
38
00:07:20.370 –> 00:07:33.710
Gillian Bennett: the experience that they had in the past was right for them in that season of life, and now the women that I work with are in a different season of life, and that means it needs a different approach to business, and different strategies, and different capa… they have different capacity.
39
00:07:33.710 –> 00:07:34.570
Gillian Bennett: So.
40
00:07:34.680 –> 00:07:37.749
Gillian Bennett: Having different coaches at different seasons of life is.
41
00:07:37.900 –> 00:07:57.679
Gillian Bennett: Completely normal and expected and can be incredibly supported, be supportive because the support that I offer within mentorship is really tailored to, hey, you’re a mom, or I do work with women that are either preparing for motherhood or pregnant, and you need to figure out what this is going to look like in this very new season of your life.
42
00:07:58.010 –> 00:08:14.690
Gillian Bennett: So, advice that they may have gotten in previous coaching programs or from previous coaches, if that advice is still relevant, we need to be able to filter it to fit this season of life, right? I’ve also heard a ton of stories about coaches spending, you know, 5 figures on programs.
43
00:08:14.780 –> 00:08:27.840
Gillian Bennett: And it felt like the coach was a really good fit. Their marketing was really great. The promises that they offered were fantastic. And it just did not live up to expectations. And I I hate that so much because.
44
00:08:28.610 –> 00:08:39.419
Gillian Bennett: There are so many options for business coaching out there, and I think business coaching can be such a brilliant and, like, life-changing experience when you are a business owner.
45
00:08:39.960 –> 00:08:44.750
Gillian Bennett: But it’s also, unfortunately, easy to make the wrong decision. I totally get that.
46
00:08:44.830 –> 00:08:57.369
Gillian Bennett: And I will maybe do an episode in the future about, like, how to choose the right business coach, because I think there are specific questions that you need to be asking and things that you need to be looking at. So, I’ll put that on the docket for later. But, my goal for you
47
00:08:57.370 –> 00:09:18.360
Gillian Bennett: is to be able to trust yourself in your decisions, regardless of who is guiding you or where you’re getting information. So in this episode, like I said, I’m going to offer you 3 filters that you can run information through to help you build that self-trust in your business, because when you have that self-trust, you will be able to feel more steady and stable and confident within this, like, shit show that is the online space.
48
00:09:18.420 –> 00:09:32.560
Gillian Bennett: Because there’s so much instability, unpredictability, and self-doubt that can come up in motherhood, and sometimes that feeds into how we feel in our businesses as well, and so we end up overthinking, we’re constantly seeking answers outside of ourselves, and
49
00:09:32.560 –> 00:09:45.190
Gillian Bennett: I’ve talked to women who are like, well, I just did in my business what, you know, XYZ person was doing because it seemed like it was working really well for them. And I want you to be able to make those decisions for yourself. So here are the three filters.
50
00:09:45.220 –> 00:09:53.109
Gillian Bennett: The first filter, when we are… when we have information in front of us, would following this advice lead me to the business that I want?
51
00:09:53.830 –> 00:09:59.540
Gillian Bennett: And when we ask ourselves this, we need to think about this in the realm of, like.
52
00:09:59.590 –> 00:10:14.670
Gillian Bennett: a normal timeframe, right? Because maybe you’re like, hey, no, I do want to build an empire. I see myself building a coaching empire. Well, that’s possible for you, but is it possible for you, sort of, within a relatively short timeframe? Because, for example.
53
00:10:14.920 –> 00:10:23.969
Gillian Bennett: you might hear advice of, you know, hey, you need to be focusing on scaling your business because you want to make a lot of money. And scaling right now might not be
54
00:10:23.980 –> 00:10:42.920
Gillian Bennett: the right advice for you. And so, continuing to try to scale your business when you don’t have the stability and steadiness of an influx of, like, one-on-one coaching clients or clients coming into a group program doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, and you can drive yourself insane trying to follow advice that is meant for someone at a different stage of business.
55
00:10:43.480 –> 00:10:49.540
Gillian Bennett: And it leaves you just feeling like you’re doing things wrong when you’re actually just trying to follow advice that isn’t right for you right now.
56
00:10:49.710 –> 00:11:07.230
Gillian Bennett: And sometimes you will see things that you’re like, hey, I’m gonna put a pin in this, and I’m gonna come back to it later. So, you might see the advice of, hey, you know, sell a low-ticket membership, because that… you can bring a ton of people in that, it’s infinitely scalable, and I have a mentorship client who…
57
00:11:07.230 –> 00:11:12.379
Gillian Bennett: has heard that advice. She’s heard it in this season of her business as a new mom.
58
00:11:12.460 –> 00:11:27.560
Gillian Bennett: And she’s like, I tried that before. I had a membership, it didn’t work for me, it was so much work, I really didn’t enjoy it. And so she’s able to use that self-trust to be like, hey, that might be great advice for that person. I’ve tried that, that didn’t work for me.
59
00:11:27.750 –> 00:11:43.239
Gillian Bennett: I’m not gonna use that… I’m not gonna use that information. Great. So, would following this advice lead me to the type of business I want? For this mentorship client, she’s like, I don’t want a membership-based business. Great! So, following advice to start a low-ticket membership? Not for her.
60
00:11:43.810 –> 00:11:55.439
Gillian Bennett: Next filter. Would following this advice fit my current capacity? And when I talk about current capacity, I’m talking about time capacity, but I’m also talking about emotional capacity, right?
61
00:11:55.600 –> 00:11:57.939
Gillian Bennett: When you become a mother.
62
00:11:58.180 –> 00:12:04.979
Gillian Bennett: I truly feel like all of a sudden emotions are just like amplified, the lows are lower, the highs are also higher, so
63
00:12:04.980 –> 00:12:25.859
Gillian Bennett: great, also stressful in some instances, and we need to be able to understand what is the capacity that I have within my business right now. And so, you might hear business coaches talking about, oh, you need a product suite, right? You need a product suite that follows your ideal client through all stages of their journey, right?
64
00:12:25.860 –> 00:12:30.259
Gillian Bennett: For your capacity right now, that may not be the thing that works for you.
65
00:12:30.290 –> 00:12:37.140
Gillian Bennett: You might know, hey, I really only have time to work, either, you know, while my kid is at daycare, or while my child is napping.
66
00:12:37.500 –> 00:12:48.109
Gillian Bennett: And so, building out a low ticket, and a mid-ticket, and a high-ticket program all at the same time, before you feel like you can actually move forward in your business, might just be a bottleneck for you.
67
00:12:48.130 –> 00:12:57.869
Gillian Bennett: And ultimately, let’s say maybe a year down the line or two years when you have more stable childcare, when your kid is in school, maybe you do look at.
68
00:12:57.870 –> 00:13:14.879
Gillian Bennett: building out a low ticket, a mid ticket, and a high ticket. But we need to be able to run it through the filter of, does following this advice fit my current capacity? If the answer is no, it’s not the right advice for you. And what I usually encourage coaches to think about is start with one offer and one ideal client.
69
00:13:15.030 –> 00:13:16.060
Gillian Bennett: Sell that.
70
00:13:16.790 –> 00:13:31.219
Gillian Bennett: Whether that is one-on-one coaching, whether that is a group program, whether that is a… I have a mentorship client who’s having a lot of success now, like, selling with, a fitness-based app that is working really well for her, but it’s one offer, one ideal client.
71
00:13:31.330 –> 00:13:43.570
Gillian Bennett: Getting really good at selling that, and then you can have an approach that gives you more space to have more capacity to discuss having multiple offers that create what people call a product suite.
72
00:13:43.650 –> 00:13:55.969
Gillian Bennett: So, filter one, would following this advice lead me to the type of business I want in, sort of, the near-ish future? And filter two, would following this advice fit my current capacity? Filter three, does this align with my values?
73
00:13:55.970 –> 00:14:16.170
Gillian Bennett: And this is so incredibly important because we need to be looking not just at business values, but life values. So maybe within your business you’re like, Hey, I wanna be making a shit ton of money. Fantastic, right? I want to feel that security in my business, but we also need to balance that with life values. So yes, I want to feel like I am making, or I want, I have certain financial goals, but.
74
00:14:16.880 –> 00:14:34.559
Gillian Bennett: I wanna… I wanna offer a story here of me using my values to help me filter out information or make decisions about my business. So, I’ve been feeling very pressed for time. I feel like the time that my son is in daycare just flies by every single day, and it’s just go, go, go the whole time.
75
00:14:34.780 –> 00:14:48.640
Gillian Bennett: And my fiance was like, well, we could add a couple of hours of daycare. We could increase his daycare hours. And theoretically, that would give me more space and it would give me more capacity to do more in my business and maybe grow faster. But.
76
00:14:48.640 –> 00:14:57.960
Gillian Bennett: When I ran it through the filter of what is important to me right now, I would rather spend more time with my son, even if it means less time in my business and less money.
77
00:14:58.980 –> 00:15:08.799
Gillian Bennett: what fits my values right now is being a more present and connected mother. That may change in the future. It is up to me to change that. That’s part of self-trust, but…
78
00:15:09.190 –> 00:15:23.480
Gillian Bennett: Someone might see that and be like, well, if you have the finances, why would you not increase daycare hours? But it doesn’t fit the parent that I want to be now. It doesn’t fit the life that I want to lead right now. I would rather limit myself in my business.
79
00:15:23.560 –> 00:15:42.189
Gillian Bennett: because I want to be a present parent. Someone else might not make that decision, but what aligns with my values is that, which means that there is certain business advice that I’m gonna run it through this filter and be like, no, that doesn’t fit the capacity I have right now, that doesn’t fit the business that I want to build right now, and that doesn’t fit my values right now.
80
00:15:42.720 –> 00:15:43.540
Gillian Bennett: So…
81
00:15:44.060 –> 00:15:57.280
Gillian Bennett: I want to leave you with this. Self-trust is a life skill, not a business skill. We can build it in business through using these filters, and that can help us increase our self-trust in our life as well. And so much of
82
00:15:57.320 –> 00:16:10.829
Gillian Bennett: building this skill starts with giving ourselves the space to say, wait, let me take a pause, this might sound really, really good, but I… let me check in on, is this right for me right now? And then practicing trusting in the decision that you make.
83
00:16:10.940 –> 00:16:30.970
Gillian Bennett: And yes, it can be so helpful to have support and have someone that you trust, like, that’s part of self-trust too, is hiring someone that you trust to guide you and support you, right? It’s the same as trusting your partner to make the right decisions about your child, or, you know, the person that you choose to take care of your child, like, that’s part of self-trust as well.
84
00:16:31.350 –> 00:16:37.100
Gillian Bennett: Ultimately, you are the one that makes the decisions. You have the autonomy to choose what is right for you.
85
00:16:37.500 –> 00:16:41.890
Gillian Bennett: And when you are able to use filters like these to do that.
86
00:16:42.790 –> 00:16:45.440
Gillian Bennett: It truly gives you such a sense of peace.
87
00:16:45.700 –> 00:16:46.820
Gillian Bennett: And…
88
00:16:47.070 –> 00:17:03.169
Gillian Bennett: I hope that you take away from this the fact that you have the autonomy to make choices in your business. Sometimes that does require having someone that you trust that can support that autonomy and help you make more informed decisions and help you make choices. But ultimately.
89
00:17:03.290 –> 00:17:10.190
Gillian Bennett: These three filters can be a really great beginning. And whether or not you’re working with a mentor or not, or a coach or not.
90
00:17:10.619 –> 00:17:15.290
Gillian Bennett: Hopefully, they help you use these filters in making choices in your business.
91
00:17:15.470 –> 00:17:16.250
Gillian Bennett: So…
92
00:17:16.339 –> 00:17:28.429
Gillian Bennett: If you are at a point in your business where you feel like you’re doing all the things that you should be doing, like you’re posting content, you’re showing up online, you’re saying DM me for coaching, but it’s not leading to more clients or business growth, it kind of all feels like a little bit random.
93
00:17:28.430 –> 00:17:43.140
Gillian Bennett: You can start with my free strategy audit. That will give you some insight into where you might be needing to organize your efforts instead of just guessing every day. It gives you a little bit of insight into the areas of business that help you develop a solid strategy.
94
00:17:43.340 –> 00:17:48.199
Gillian Bennett: You can find the link for that in the show notes. Again, it’s totally free. It takes about five minutes.
95
00:17:48.380 –> 00:17:59.809
Gillian Bennett: If you want to chat with me about anything, I’m wildly available on Instagram. Well, not really. I’m available during daycare hours on Instagram, and then I do my best to stay off of social media when I’m with my son.
96
00:18:00.180 –> 00:18:07.150
Gillian Bennett: And with that, thank you for listening. Thank you for being here. Hopefully you found this helpful, and I will see you again next time.
